Celebrating a year of partnership and progress

As my first year as superintendent of Owatonna Public Schools comes to a close, I extend my sincere gratitude to our students, staff, families, community members, and School Board for the support, partnership, and trust you have shown throughout this year.

Stepping into this role has been both a privilege and a learning experience. One of the greatest gifts of this first year has been the opportunity to listen, learn, and gain a deep appreciation for the strong foundation that already exists in Owatonna Public Schools. The success we experience today is built upon the dedication, vision, and hard work of those who have served our students and community over many years. I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon that legacy.

This year brought many accomplishments worth celebrating. We implemented additional safety and security protocols designed to enhance the well-being of our students and staff. Through the Mission Moment at each School Board business meeting, we highlighted the incredible partnerships, innovative programs, and student successes occurring throughout our district. We launched a district-wide perceptions survey to ensure the voices of our students, staff, and families help guide our continuous improvement efforts. Our staff engaged in important curriculum implementation work across the district. In addition, we expanded Owatonna Online, creating greater opportunities for students and families to access high-quality educational options that meet their unique needs.

I want to extend a special thank you to our teachers and staff, whose commitment, flexibility, and countless hours of work have made these efforts possible. 

At the same time, this year was not without challenges. Some of the most difficult moments involved the financial decisions necessary to ensure financial stability of our district. These decisions were not made lightly, and I recognize the impact they have had. Throughout these conversations, I have been continually impressed by the professionalism and unwavering commitment of our staff and community to doing what is best for students.

As I reflect on the year, what stands out most is the strength of the Owatonna community. Our students continue to inspire us with their talents, perseverance, and accomplishments. One of my many personal highlights this year was celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2026 and witnessing firsthand the incredible futures that lie ahead for our graduates. Their success is a reflection of the collective efforts of dedicated staff, supportive families, and a community that consistently invests in its students. 

Every day, our staff bring our mission of Inspiring Excellence - Every Learner, Every Day to life through their unwavering commitment to student learning, meaningful relationships, and the belief that every student can succeed. Their dedication, combined with the support of our families and community partners, creates opportunities that are truly unique and special to Owatonna. 

As we move into summer, I hope everyone finds time to rest, recharge, and enjoy meaningful moments with family and friends. We have much to celebrate and many reasons to be optimistic about the future. While challenges will continue to arise, I am confident that by working together, we will continue to build on our strengths, pursue new opportunities, and ensure every student has the support and opportunities they need to thrive.

Thank you for a memorable first year. It is an honor to serve Owatonna Public Schools, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the years ahead.
