MULTILINGUAL SERVICES

At Owatonna Public Schools, we believe that cultural and linguistic diversity of the students we serve is our greatest strength. We strive to create equitable and quality learning environments that respect, reflect, and accommodate this diversity.

The Multilingual Learner Department exists to ensure that Owatonna Public Schools’ linguistically diverse students have opportunities to develop language competency through multiple strands of programming. This programming is detailed in our district’s Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP), linked here in English, Spanish, and Somali. Often referred to as English Learner (EL) services, these programs promote academic achievement of students who qualify for EL services through research-based instructional strategies, language-rich learning environments, and affirmation of student, family, and community assets. The framework of the LIEP sets expectations for EL support and service for students depending on grade and language proficiency level. The supports and services described in the LIEP may be modified to address the unique profile of needs in each building.

Parents can receive more detailed information about English Learner services from their students' EL teacher. Click on the school name to the right for teacher contact information.
